Study aim
A systematic review and meta-analysis of 4 clinical trials to determine the efficacy of B. animalis ssp. lactis HN019™ supplementation on cellular immune activity in healthy elderly subjects.
Study design
Systematic review was conducted by searching databases for clinical trials on phagocytic capacity or natural killer cell activity following HN019™ use in the elderly.
Study method
- Random effects meta-analysis was performed with standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval between probiotic and control groups for each outcome
Study results
- Meta-analysis of four clinical studies in healthy elderly adults showed that HN019™ is associated with improved phagocytic capacity and natural killer cell activity compared to controls (P<0.001 and P=0.02, respectively)
